Montreal had held Evgeni Malkin at bay for two games, (in fact Malkin hadn’t scored in five games), but he came through Tuesday night and scored the winner. Speculation as to what was going on with Sidney Crosby and Malkin had the Penguin’s fans baffled and frustrated. Crosby had been pointless in two games, as well as held to a single shot. However the Canadiens knew that containing Crosby would be their biggest asset. There was a lot of hard hitting and jostling in the first period. Montreal out-shot Pittsburg 7-3, but the Penguins out-shot the Canadiens 13-3 in the second. There was no scoring in the first two periods. Hal Gil received a holding penalty at 19:48 of the second and Montreal and Pittsburg were meted out coincidental penalties at 20.00. Malkin scored a power play goal at 1:16 0f the third. The so far– boring game — got some excitement. There were a few more scoring chances for both teams and a lot more scraps and jostling around the nets, but there was no more scoring — until Montreal pulled Jaraslov Halek and Pascal Dupuis put one into the open net. The Penguins won 2-0 which put them ahead in the series 2-1.
