The Montreal Canadiens lost 4-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday  night, but they are still on top of the Atlantic division by 1 point. Fortunately Tampa Bay lost to the Islanders 5-2. The Canadiens were beaten by the third line of the Penguins. It has been an interesting battle for top spot between the Canadiens and Lightening, and there is more to be seen on Thursday night when Montreal hosts the St Louis Blues and Tampa Bay is hosted by Toronto. I believe the last time the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup was in 1993.

With the New York Rangers only managing to get 16 shots on goal in 60 minutes it is not surprising that they were  lacking in goals. The Tampa Bay Lightening had 30 shots and made good on 5. Ryan Callahan got 2 goals … one of them a power play. Jonathan Toews had 1 goal and an assist. The Lightening won an impressive 5-1 and the they are back and forth contenders for the lead in the Atlantic Division with the Montreal Canadiens. Keep up the good work Habs.

The Montreal Canadiens took only 19 shots to come up with 4 goals, while the Detroit Red only managed 1 goal on 29 shots. For Montreal it was their sixth straight win. Although there is a long season ahead to the Playoffs. if the Montreal Canadiens can continue the prowess that they have so far shown, I can see them as a great contender to carry away the Cup. The have been playing  precision hockey and although they have made mistakes they seem to be able to nullify those mistakes with a quick recovery. Their goaltending has been exemplary and their lines coordinate well. I have never really been a great fan of the Montreal Canadiens, but I am certainly impressed with their play so far. I just may wind up hoping on their band wagon.

With the Anaheim Ducks decisive 6-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Sunday night, the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames are skating close on their heals, The Canucks have a game in hand and are only 2 points behind. The Flames are 2 points behind with equal games. The Pacific Division could well be up for grabs for our two Canadian teams in that division.

Turnovers by the Chicago Blackhawks were one of the major reasons the Detroit Red Wings had a 4-1 win over them on Friday night. This is definitely not the Hawks we have seen in the past. The Winnipeg Jets are even 1 point up on them. All they managed to play well  on was the power play goal by Patrick Kane in the first period. Turnovers led to Detroit’s first three goals. Kris Versteeg  gave the first turnover, which led to the Red Wings first goal. He was benched for the rest of the period. The Hawks showed some spark in the third period, but nothing came of it. It is a pity to see a team that has performed so well in the past make such ridiculous turnovers. I believe this is the lowest they have been in the standings at this point of the season.

Pascal Dupuis scored late in the first period and early in the second to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night. Sidney Crosby got an assist on Pascal’s second goal. but has gone six games without a goal. Cody Franson got a goal for Toronto in the third. but the game ended 2-1 for the Penns. Dupuis had been united with his old line mates Sidney Crosby and Kris Kunitz.  It was the 17th annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game at the Air Canada Centre which starts off the Hockey Hall of Fame Induction weekend.

CANADA IN THE NHL by Momma Gouche

With the Montreal Canadiens win over the Boston Bruins Thursday night and Tampa Bays loss to the San Jose Sharks the Habs again take over the lead in the Atlantic Division with 17games for 25 points. They are only one point behind Anaheim, in the Pacific Division. The Calgary Flames are in third spot in the Pacific Division and the Winnipeg Jets have 20 points. If they can continue to play as well they should have a crack at making the playoffs. The Edmonton Oilers are our only non contender at this point with a lowly 14 points in the Pacific Division. My only sore spot in the playoffs is where my Chicago Black Hawks are positioned. They have a lot to pick up if they want to in their usual spot in top of the heap.
