The Sharks Clip The Wings by Momma Gouche

The Detroit Red Wings/San Jose Sharks game opened with three penalties meted out at 2:30. Both teams were trying to prove their dominance. Nicklas Lidstrom scored for Detroit at 9:30 and that score remained the rest of the period and through the second. Jimmy Howard alertness kept the Sharks from tallying in the second with having thwarted off 18 shots by the end of the period. Detroit didn’t put up much of an offensive play and were even out-shot in the third. Howard took a roughing penalty at 9:57 of the period and Joe Pavelski capitalized on it at 10:22, The game went into overtime. Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader took a double minor at 2:43, but the Wings were able to ride it out, even though they were out-shot 7-1. Ben Ferriero put the game away at 7:03 of OT and San Jose went away one up in the series. Jimmy Howard played a near faultless game until he took the penalty that created the power play goal for the Sharks in the third; which subsequently became his own albatross. A rather strange game in that one would have expected the Red Wings to have been more challenging opponent.

Tampa Bay Tame The Capitals…by Momma Gouche

Even though Sean Bergenheim put the Lightning ahead at 2:12 of the opening of the Tampa Bay/Washington game Friday night, it didn’t appear as though the Lightning would be any match for the tough Washington squad. The loss of Simon Gagne and Pavel Kubina, with head injuries, added to the challenge. Eric Fehr put Washington ahead 2-1 at 1:51  of the second, but steady perseverence lead to a goal by Steve Downie at 16:17 of the second and the score was 2-2. The Capitals’ Jason Chimera took a roughing penalty at 19:28 which resulted in a power play goal for Tampa Bay’s Steve Stamkos. The Lightning took two penalties in the third, which didn’t bode well for their chances, but at 19:20 Dominic Moore netted a wrist shot and the Tampa Bay Lightning bolted to a 4-2 victory. Another two head injuries has put a heavy damper on the hockey world, but hopefully the efforts of Keith Primeau, Kerry Goulet and interested supporters can educate parents, coaches, and players on the serious damage done by head shots. It appears as though Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins has suffered a relapse and in not ready for any more hockey activity this season.

Montreal Not Up To Speed…by Momma Gouche

Though Montreal put up a good effort on Wednesday night, they were not up to the speed that the Boston Bruins were able to maintain. The Canadiens did not seem to have the legs for it. John Boychuk scored for the Bruins at 3:31 and Mark Recchi added another at 5:33. Yannik Weber scored on a power play at 9:49 and Montreal came out of the period down by one. When Tomas Plekanec scored a short-handed goal at 5:50 of the second it looked like the Canadiens might be able to hold their own. Chris Kelly scored for Boston  at 9:44 of the third, but PK Subban put in a great shot at 18:03, to tie the score at 3. Nathan Horton put the cap on the game in overtime at 5:43 and the Canadiens were history in the series. I don’t think Montreal had recuperated enough from … back to back … games to have the extra wind to go the distance. The Canadiens got the only two power play goals of the game … but it was not enough.
