Canucks Nip The Sharks (But Barely)…by Momma Gouche

After 18 minutes and 47  seconds of end to end play, Roberto Luongo went behind the net and shot the
puck right onto Joe Thornton’ stick. Thornton scored in an empty net. And the
San Jose Sharks were up 1-0 on the Vancouver Canucks Sunday night. The crowd went
wild when, at 1:49 of the second, Maxim Lapierre tied the score 1-1. Vancouver
seemed to have picked up the tempo, but their three power plays were less than
impressive. San Joses’s Patrick Marleau scored on a power play at 8:44.
With roughly three minutes left in the period there was a huge pile up in front
of the Sharks’ net and Vancouver had two or three shots that it was tough for
Anttii Niemi to see. A minute later the Canucks had two more shots, but Niemi
withstood them all. The difference in the two periods was Luongo’s error in the
first and Niemi stalwart play in the second. Kevin Bieksra scored at 7:02 in the
third to tie the game and Henrik Sedin got the winning goal on a power play at
8:21.Vancouver out shot San Jose 28-19. I think Niemi was the star of the game
and I didn’t look. Vancouver still have a tough row ahead of them and must come
out with a little more verve in the first period.
