Red Wings’ Lindstrom sets July 1 deadline

It’s a safe bet that Detroit Red Wings’ management, players and fans alike were wondering on Thursday night if they would ever see, future hall of fame, defenceman, Nicklas Lindstrom, skating out onto Joe Louis Arena once training camp starts in the fall. Approximately 48 hours after the Red Wings were eliminated by the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Semifinals, Lindstrom, who recently turned 41, told the media that he would take his time before deciding whether to play or not and that he would have a decision by July 1 at the latest. This past season Lindstom, who is a four time Stanley Cup winner, showed no signs of slowing down as he scored 16 goals and 62 points in 82 games. The only downfall for the six time Norris Trophy winner is that he finished a -2, which remarkably, is the first time in his 19 year career that he has posted a minus statistic. Teammate, Mike Modano, who is also leaning towards retirement, fully believes that Lindstrom should continue and take a run at Bobby Orr’s record of winning eight Norris Trophies. “If I was Nick, I’d come back … and I’d keep coming back,” said Modano. “If he gets the Norris, he has a chance at history of catching Bobby Orr.”  A sign of consistency is that Lindstrom, who was a third round Wings pick in 1989, is a Norris Trophy finalist for the 11th time in the past 13 years. History could be made in June, for if he’s selected as the winner, then Lindstrom will tie hall of famer Doug Harvey for second with seven Norris Trophies. “I think he’ll come back,” Wings coach, Mike Babcock said. “He’s a good player and he’s on a team that has a good opportunity.”
