Five key Flyers having off-season surgery

Following what was a drastically disappointing playoff run, Philadelphia Flyers GM, Paul Holmgren, announced on Tuesday that five of his key players are scheduled for off-season surgery. Philadelphia, who finshed second in the Eastern Conference with 106 points, were considered one of the favourites this spring to win the Stanley Cup. After making it to the finals last year the Flyers took a giant step back, as they went seven full games in beating the Buffalo Sabres in the opening round, before being swept by the Buffalo Sabres in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Heading the list of those needing medical attention is captain Mike Richards, who needs wrist surgery. Others going under the knife includes Kris Versteeg ( pulled stimach muscle),  Michael Leighton (hip), Blair Betts (finger) and Andrej Meszaros who has a wrist injury. Meanwhile,  power forwards, Jeff Carter and Scott Hartnell, will both be checked out by the Flyers’ medical staff for hip issues. Another major concern revoles around aging defenceman, Chris Pronger, who missed eight post season games due to a hand injury. Apparently he now has a painful lower back and surgery is a possible option.
