Rodriguez gets day off in Yankees win

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi insisted that nothing should be read into him giving third baseman Alex Rodriguez a day off on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Even though Rodriguez went hitless and struck out twice in Friday’s night 5-3 loss to the Jays, Girardi insisted that he just wanted to give him a break due to the team playing 16 games in as many days. “I feel OK,” Rodriguez who is hitting .290 with five homeruns and 18 RBI’s said. “I did not have a good day yesterday, but for the most part, I feel pretty good.” Girardi however said that at the plate Rodriguez isn’t using his legs enough in his swing which might have to do with fatigue. Rodriguez, who has 618 career homeruns fully supported his manager’s move of not playing him and fully understands why it was done. ” With 16 games in a row, I think he’s going to do that pretty much with everybody at some point,” Rodriguez said. Taking his place in the Yankees 5-4 Saturday win was another veteran in Eric Chavez who had a hit and scored a run in three at bats.
