Niemi in Sharks net for Game 4 vs. Kings

San Jose Sharks’ veteran coach, Todd McLellan, showed his strong loyalty towards netminder, Antti Niemi, by naming him the starter for Game 4  of their playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings. Niemi, who last spring led the  Chicago Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup victory, will be attempting to bounce back from a disasterous Game 3, which saw him surrender four goals on 10 shots, before getting pulled in favour of back up, Antero Niittymaki. McLellan might be opening himself up for second guessing by going back to Niemi, as opposed to Nittymaki, who was solid in relief by stopping 11 of 12 shots. Led by his goaltending, the Sharks, who are heavily favoured over the Kings, turned a 4-0 deficit into a 6-5 overtime victory. “We’re confident in both of them,” said McLellan, whose team leads the series 2-1. “When you look at Nemo’s record when we pulled him (during regular-season play), which wasn’t very often, he responded very well. If we go that route, which I think we’re leaning towards, we expect him to be very good.” For the season Niemi registered a respectable 35-18-6 record with a 2.38 GAA and a .920 save percentage.
