Sakic returns to the Avalanche organization

The Colorado Avalanche made their best acquisition when, earlier this week, they announced that future hall of famer and former Avalanche captain, Joe Sakic, will be taking a front office job as the executive adviser. Sakic, who spent his entire 20 year career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise, will be assuming the front office position after the season. “Joe has been the face of our franchise for two decades,” Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix said about Sakic, who retired almost two years ago. “He led our organization to success with his contributions both on and off the ice. Right after his retirement we kept him involved, and now his presence and contributions to our team will be a huge asset going forward.” Sakic, who served as the team’s captain for 16 years, led the Avalanche to Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. During that magical 2001 season Sakic also had success on the international circuit where he helped Canada win gold at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics. Unfortunately the Burnaby B.C. native is coming into a position that has the Avalanche badly struggling. After making the play-offs a year ago Colorado, who slumped drastically in January, head into the final two weeks of the season seeded second last in the league. ” I feel that now is the time for this new challenge,” said Sakic, who scored 625 goals and 1,641 points in his career. “The fact that the Avalanche is giving me this opportunity shows how much they trust my background and hockey experience. I look forward to this new expanded role with the franchise.” There is no question that this is a move Colorado fans will definitely like.
