Coach Sutter doesn’t hesitate in calling out Kiprusoff

Calgary Flames coach Brent Sutter was blunt in his description of goalie Mikka Kiprusoff’s play during their Tuesday night 6-5 shootout loss against the Carolina Hurricanes. Kipprusoff, who has a 16-17-2 record with a 2.73 GAA was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on only eight shots. “He’s battling it right now,” Sutter whose team was losing 5-2 when he made the move said. He’s got to work himself through it. And Kipper will, but it’s that time of year when we can’t afford to not have good goaltending. Kipper is obviously a very good goaltender, but right now he’s fighting it.” What’s alarming if you’re a Flames fan is the fact that currently Kipper has a save percentage of .901 which is way below his career average of .913. Meanwhile a good sign for the struggling Flames is that backup Henrik Karlsson was stellar as he stopped 21 of 22 shots. It was a performance that drew raves from Sutter who hasn’t ruled out giving him the next start. At approximately the halfway mark of the season, Calgary finds itself desperate for wins as they sit 14th in the Western Conference eight points out of a playoff spot.
