Senators forward Kovalev will miss time with knee injury

Without question this has probably been the toughest season for Ottawa Senators veteran forward Alex Kovalev. With the exception of surpassing the 1,000 point mark earlier this season, there hasn’t been a lot to smile about for the aging veteran who has scored only eight goals and 18 points in 42 games. Often questioned for his work ethic Kovalev, who is in his second year of a two year deal with the Senators has seen his ice time reduced which has led to some friction between himself and coach Cory Clouston. Kovalev who will be 38 next month suffered another setback on Saturday when he injured his knee in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Clouston, whose team are currently 11 points out of a playoff spot and on an ugly five game losing streak is looking at the Kovalev injury as an opportunity for a young or old Senator to take advantage of the opportunity to play more. “To me, it’s an opportunity for somebody else to step up, whether it’s a young guy or somebody already in our lineup to pick up those minutes,” Clouston said. “Just because you score down (in Binghamton), it doesn’t mean it always translates up here, but we’re looking for some offence, some work ethic and some energy, and I think we’ve got that, for the most part (from previous recalls).”
