Sunday night around the NHL

The New York Rangers suffered a tremendous blow on Saturday night when they lost scoring forward Alex Frolov to a season ending knee injury. This veteran forward who came to broadway last summer from the Los Angeles Kings with seven goals and 16 points in 43 games this season. The injury, which occurred in a 2-1win against the St. Louis Blues has been diagnosed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament. No word yet on whether Frolov will need to go under the knife.

After trying unsuccesfully to deal disgruntled defenceman Mike Commodore the Columbus Blue Jackets decided to send the 31 year-old to their American Hockey League farm team in Springfield. For the season Commodore has scored two goals and six points but unfortunately has been butting heads with his coach Scott Arniel. With Commodore’s contract the Blue Jackets who are currently fighting for a playoff spot are taking an expensive 3.75 million dollar cap hit. To replace him the Blue Jackets have called up defenceman Grant Clitsome who has scored five goals and 15 in 32 games for Springfield.

Jonas Hiller continued his stellar play on Sunday night in stopping 37 shots to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 1-0 win against the San Jose Sharks. Hiller, who has now gone 154 minues and 50 seconds without allowing a goal registered his fourth shutout of the season and 10th in his career. “It’s great that I’m not getting scored on,” Hiller who stopped 27 shots in a 6-0 win against the Blue Jackets on Friday said. “But what really counts is the two points against a conference rival. We had a great team effort.”
