Strasburg feeling optimistic about elbow rehab

Washington Nationals management and fans alike received some welcoming news when their 2009 first round pick Stephen Strasburg announced this week that his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule. Strasburg made a huge slash last summer by registering a 5-3 record with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in only 12 starts before having his season come to an abrupt end due to reconstructive elbow surgery. “It’s going great right now,” Strasburg who is receiving physical therapy on the elbow three times a week said. “I’ve been making big strides.” In the New Year, Strasburg has a doctors appointment set up near his San Diego home where it will be determined if his arm is fit enough to endure the rigors of a throwing program. Part of his therapy also involves strengthening the shoulder which can often be an issue following elbow problems. “We don’t want that to happen, obviously,” Strasburg said, “so we’re strengthening up everything.”
