Monday night around the NHL

1. MODANO TARGETING A MARCH RETURN

Detroit Red Wings management and fans received some good news on Monday when it was announced that veteran forward Mike Modano is targeting a March return. This 40 year-old, who has scored two goals and eight points in 20 games suffered a serious injury back on November 26 when he was badly cut on the right forearm and wrist by Columbus Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger. Modano, who required surgery signed a one year deal last summer with the Red Wings after playing his entire career with Minnesota/Dallas Stars organization.

2. WINTER CLASSIC ICE PREPARATION TO BEGIN

On Thursday night right following the Pittsburgh Steelers football game, Dan Craig, who is the NHL facilities operations manager will along with his staff begin converting Heinz Field into a hockey rink.
The following day a refrigeration trailer will be arriving at the field and on Christmas Day power generators will be hooked up. The target day for when the rink will be primed and ready is December 28. This rink will house various historic events such as a Capitals vs Penguins alumni game and of course the New Years day classic featuring the Penguins vs Washington Capitals.

3. SABRES CONNOLLY OUT INDEFINITELY

Buffalo Sabres scoring forward Tim Connolly will require surgery after he suffered facial injuries last Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. ”It looks like he’s gonna have to get operated on,” Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff said. ”It’s bad, so we’re gonna have to get it taken care of.” Connolly who earlier missed eight games with a groin injury is to be re-evaluated in a week.
