NHL news for a Sunday night

1. ISLANDERS GOALIE DIPIETRO INJURED

The New York Islanders can’t seem to get a break as their starting goalie Rick DiPietro couldn’t start on Saturday against the Phoenix Coyotes due to swelling in his left knee. The Islanders who are currently last overall called up 27 year-old Nathan Lawson who lost a 4-3 shootout decision. Lawson, who is 2-4-2 with Bridgeport in the American League isn’t expected to be up for very long as the injury to DiPietro isn’t considered serious.

2. NO SET DATE FOR THE RETURN OF JORDAN STAAL

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal will have to remain patient as he still hasn’t gotten the green light seven weeks to practice. Staal who still hasn’t played a game this season was originally supposed to be out of action for six weeks after undergoing hand surgery seven weeks ago. The Penguins deny that the x-rays show another break as Staal still hasn’t gotten the green light to begin skating. Prior to November 1 when he fractured his hand, Staal was just getting ready to make his season debut after recovering from a right foot infection suffered last spring in the playoffs.

3. CAPITALS SIGN ERSKINE TO AN EXTENSION

The Washington Capitals took care of some in-house business last week when they re-signed shutdown defenceman John Erskine to a two-year extension. This 30 year-old, who is a 10 year veteran was an impressive +16 last year for the Capitals. This season Erskine, who is in his fifth season with the Capitals has produced three goals and seven points along with 43 penalty minutes.
