Kovalchuk scores two in leading the Devils to victory

New Jersey Devils superstar Ilya Kovalchuk finally showed the home fans why the team re-signed him last summer to a 15 year 100 million dollar contract. Playing at home on Wednesday night Kovalchuk, who has only five goals and a horrendous -18 rating on the season enjoyed his best game in New Jersey by scoring two goals and leading the Devils to a 3-0 win against the Phoenix Coyotes. Besides for Kovalchuk who posted his first two goal game this season, the Devils also got a goal from rookie defenceman Mark Fayne who scored what was the first of his career. Also staring was future hall of fame goaltender Martin Brodeur who turned aside 29 shots for what was his third shutout of this campaign and 113th overall. The Devils who haven’t experienced a victory since November 27 against the Philadelphia Flyers still have a long way to go if they are to get back into playoff contention. Through their first 30 games the Devils have a woeful record of 9-19-2 which leaves them 14th in the Eastern Conference and 16 points behind the Boston Bruins for that last playoff spot. In Other Devils news 37 year-old forward Brian Rolston cleared waivers and was playing against Phoenix on Wednesday night.
