Sens Kovalev Demoted to Fourth Line

First it was Dany Heatley and now it’s veteran forward Alexei Kovalev who spoke out against their Ottawa Senators Coach Cory Clouston. A couple of years ago Heatley wasn’t getting the desired ice time and eventually asked to be moved from Ottawa. Meanwhile on Friday Kovalev, whose been shutout for the past six games expressed his dismay about being demoted to the fourth line during a 5-3 loss on Thursday against the New York Rangers. “There’s nothing I can do about it,” said Kovalev who only has seven goals and 14 points this season. “I’m not the only one not playing well and he (Clouston) decides to pick me. It’s been happening my whole career. I accept that.” Kovalev, who is in the second year of a two-year 10 million dollar contract had only 12 shifts and less than 10 minutes of ice time against the Rangers. Rumours have been swirling for quite some time about a possible rift between Clouston and Kovalev which was something the coach strongly denied. He is not being picked on,” said the coach. “It’s not about under performance. It’s not about expecting everyone to have a good performance every night. We just want the effort. We want the consistency of effort. That’s all it comes down to.”
It will be interesting to see what happens on Friday when the Senators are home to play the struggling New Jersey Devils.
