NHL NOTES

1. HEMSKY GONE LONG TERM FOR OILERS

The task of making the playoffs this year just got a little bit harder for the streaking Edmonton Oilers who will be without scoring forward Ales Hemsky for an extended period of time. This 27 year-old, who has scored seven goals and 18 points this season has been out of the line-up since December 2 with a groin injury. “Groins are temperamental in terms of healing,” Oilers coach Tom Renney said. “I think it’s going to take some time. It could be upwards of a month.” Hemsky hurt himself in a game against the Montreal Canadiens where he had a goal and three points.

2. SAMUELSSON SUFFERS SERIOUS CONCUSSION

Last weekend the Vancouver Canucks suffered a big loss when veteran forward Mikael Samuelsson suffered a second period concussion. Playing against the St. Louis Blues, Samuelsson, who has six goals and 17 points hurt himself in the aftermath of what was a violent head on collision with Blues Vladimir Sobotka. Even though the team is calling it a mild concussion, they are still being cautious by sitting out Samuelsson for at least three games.

3. BLUES LOSE MCDONALD WITH UPPER BODY INJURY

It was also a costly weekend for the St. Louis Blues who lost veteran scoring forward Andy McDonald on Saturday night to what is being called an upper body injury. McDonald, who has eight goals and 17 points was hurt on the overtime goal scored by Taylor Hall during the Oilers 2-1 win. He appeared to collide with Oilers veteran forward Shawn Horcoff. “He’s out, upper body, we’ll go day-to-day and we’ll get some evaluation when we get back to St. Louis,” Blues Coach Davis Payne said.
