News Around The NHL

1. MALKIN NOT IN PENS LINE UP

The Pittsburgh Penguins got seven goals on Saturday night despite playing without power forward Evgeni Malkin. The 24 year-old who has only 8 goals and 22 points missed the game due to a knee injury that isn’t considered serious. “It’s not a structural problem with anything,” Pens coach Dan Bylsma said. “He’s just been banged up.” This comes only two days after Malkin logged only 16:26 against the Atlanta Thrashers.

2. MARKOV OUT FOR SEASON

It’s been a tough month for Montreal Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov who has only played seven games this year due to suffering a serious knee injury back on November 13 against the Carolina Hurricanes. Last week Markov who has a goal and three points this season found out that he will miss the remainder of the season due to needing surgery to repair his meniscus and reconstruct his ACL. This is the latest setback for the 31 year-old who only played 45 games last year due to an ankle and knee injury.

3. DOWNIE DAY TO DAY FOR THE LIGHTNING

Tampa Bay Lightning agitator Steve Downie who has 3 goals and 15 points was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain after he blocked a shot against the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Downie, who adds sandpaper and a strong work ethic to the line-up joins veteran forward Vincent Lecavalier on the disabled list. Playing in place of Downie on the top line will be veteran Simon Gagne who earlier this year missed a significant amount of time with a neck injury.
