Daniel Briere in Hot Water

Surprisingly, Philadelphia Flyers’ scoring forward, Daniel Briere, has gotten himself into a bit of hot water with the NHL. Known for his speed and offensive exploits, this 33 year-old, who has six goals and eight points in 11 games this year, went over the line last Saturday night against the rival New York Islanders. With only one minute remaining, and the Flyers winning 6-1, Briere crosschecked Islanders forward Frans Nielson, which resulted in Islanders’ goalie, Rick DiPietro, going after the smaller Briere. For his action Briere received a five minute major for cross checking and a game misconduct. He also recieved an invitation to particpate in a disciplinary conference call with NHL headquarters on Monday morning, where — more than likely — he will be handed a suspension. Briere mentioned that he didn’t like the way New York was handling what was a one sided game. “When you get embarrassed like that, there’s lots of frustration,” Briere said. “They didn’t like that and had to respond in some way, somehow. They did it with their fists.”
