NHL NOTES

1. RIBEIRO ARRESTED
Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk is facing his first bit of controversy as key forward Mike Ribeiro was arrested on Sunday night on a misdemeanour charge of intoxication at a suburban Dallas restaurant. This 30 year-old who already has three assists and a +2 rating spent a few hours in jail before being released. Nieuwendyk whose team is off to a 2-0 start said that the matter would be taken care of internally.

2. JANSSEN SUFFERS CONCUSSION
It wasn’t a season opener for St, Louis Blues tough guy Cam Janssen to remember as he suffered a serious concussion when playing against the Philadelphia Flyers Janssen accidentally took an elbow from teammate Brad Winchester late in the second period. As a result the five year veteran will miss somewhere between two to three weeks.

3. BABCOCK SIGNS FOUR YEAR EXTENSION
On Monday the Detroit Red Wings took care of some in house business when they signed Coach Mike Babcock to a four year extension. In his tenure with Detroit Babcock has led the Wings to a Stanley Cup victory in 2008 and within one game of repeating the following year. He has also led Canada to an Olympic gold medal at last year’s Vancouver Winter Olympics. “His stock as a head coach is probably as high as anybody’s and he could’ve gone on the open market next summer,” Red Wings general manager said. “We started talking about it in June and July went our separate ways, and we knew this would get done. He loves it in Detroit.”
