Boston Bruins management and fans alike received some comforting news on Saturday when it was announced that their hulking defenceman Zdeno Chara will be remaining in Boston for the next seven years. This 33 year-old who is entering his 13th season was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent until Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli made the announcement prior to the Bruins game against the Phoenix Coyotes. Chara who is now signed until 2018-19 scored 44 points last season and was a solid +19. In his career this 6 foot 9 two time Olympian has scored 111 goals and 252 career points in 847 regular season games with the Ottawa Senators and Bruins.

Prior to kicking off their home opener against the Detroit Red Wings there was some unfinished business that the Chicago Blackhawks had to take care of. That business was unveiling the Stanley Cup winning banner from last spring when the Hawks finally ended their 49 year drought. Helping to raise the banner were five members of the 1961 Hawks team who of course were the last team to win the cup prior to last year. Helping raise the banner were Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, Ab McDonald and Eric Nesterenko.

Injuries once again showed its ugly head with the New York Islanders as the latest casualty is none other than super sophomore John Tavares. Looking to improve on last year’s 54 point season Tavares suffered some tough luck on Saturday when he suffered a concussion after being elbowed to the head by Adam Burish of the Dallas Stars. New York have already lost defenseman Mark Streit and scoring forward Kyle Okposo.
