Brandon Sutter Scores Two

Enjoying a solid opening night was Carolina Hurricanes third year forward Brandon Sutter who scored two goals in leading the Canes to a 4-3 win against the Minnesota Wild. After taking a huge step forward last year by scoring 21 goals and 40 points for the Canes Sutter who is only 21 years-old is expected to be an elite forward and he took that took that step not only offensively but defensively as well against Minnesota. Also impressing for Carolina in the opener being played in Finland was last summer’s first round pick Jeff Skinner who was playing on a line with scorer Tuomo Ruutu. “He had three chances and brought a great save from the goalie,” Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said about Skinner’s performance. “He’s still learning the game, and the first thing is earning the confidence of the coaches, get us thinking about how many minutes he should have, and if he could make our top nine forwards. It if stays like this, he will. He has eight more games to convince us.” Scoring what was the very first NHL of the new season was Minnesota forward Guillaume Latendresse. Also scoring for Minnesota was Matt Cullen and Brent Burns. Meanwhile besides for Sutter with the deuce also replying for Carolina was Anton Babchuk and Jussi Jokinen. “We were nervous during the first 10 minutes,” Jokinen who was a 30 goals scorer last season said. “Then we got bigger intensity and energy and played a good second period. They have two good units offensively, but their weakness is the defence, and we used that, putting pressure on their defenceman.”
