Sheldon Souray Shipped to the Minors

The Sheldon Souray saga continued on Wednesday when the Edmonton Oilers took action in sending the disgruntled defenseman to the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. This 12 year veteran, who played in only 37 games in Edmonton last year, due to injuries, was not invited to the team’s training camp, due to him ripping the organization last spring. Becausehe has two years, at 4.5 million per year, remaining on his contract, Oilers’ GM, Steve Tambellini, couldn’t trade him during the summer. After not being claimed on waivers last week Tambellini decided to lend him to the Bears, who are an affiliate with the Washington Capitals; as opposed to sending him down to Oklahoma City, who are affiliated with the Oilers. “We think it’s best probably for Sheldon to not put him in a spot,” Tambellini said about lending him to Hershey; as opposed to sending him down to Oklahoma City. “We didn’t want it to be an uncomfortable position. This is best for the player and Oak City. He’s going to a very competitive team. They like the opportunity of having him there –at this point.” Tambellini is still trying to trade Souray, who has scored 96 career goals and 262 points in 650 career games with the New Jersey Devils, Montreal Canadiens and the Oilers.
