Mike Cammalleri Suspended for Toronto’s Home Opener

NHL discipline Colin Campbell came down hard on Montreal Canadiens forward Mike Cammalleri by suspending the forward for Thursday’s season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Cammalleri who is beginning his second season with Montreal was given a one game vacation along with a hefty fine due to his vicious slash on New York Islanders rookie forward Nino Niederreiter. Following the incident on Saturday which left Niderreiter with a badly bruised ankle Cammalleri who is not known for being dirty was given a five minute major and was thrown out of the game. Apparently Cammalleri who is coming off a 50 point season was frustrated after receiving a hard check from Niederreiter and as a result high sticked the Islanders first round choice before following it up with a spear then a slash. “I got an elbow first, then kind of got a stick,” Neiderreiter who was chosen fifth overall this past June said. “Then I was trying to get back in the play and got a cheap-shot. It’s pre-season, but you should never do a cheap-shot like that. He came from behind and I never expected to get slashed. It’s not a good thing.” No word yet on whether Cammalleri will be appealing his one game sentence.
