NHL Notes

On Wednesday night at a team function the Chicago Blackhawks were presented with an incredible eight- carot Stanley Cup ring which according to forward Troy Brouwer is more spectacular than the 1996 Colorado Avalanche championship ring his coach was wearing. “I was sitting next to Joel Quenneville (coach), and he showed me his (ring) from Colorado,” Brouwer said. “And ours is so much bigger and nicer. But that’s how the Blackhawks do things around here, first class.” The Blackhawks who with the win ended an ugly 49 year Stanley Cup drought were presented with rings that had the Blackhawks logo in the center along with the years (1934, 1938, 1961 and 2010) that they won the Stanley Cup. “It’s just huge,” Brouwer who scored 22 goals and 40 points said. “It’s just huge. “I think it’s twice the size of any other ring that’s been made. It weighs your hand down. It’s pretty enormous, something you’ll definitely treasure for a long time.”

2. Souray And Gerber Put On Waivers
NHL teams will have until noon on Friday to put a claim in for either veteran defenseman Sheldon Souray or goalie Martin Gerber who were both put on the waiver wire on Thursday by the Edmonton Oilers. Souray who still has two years remaining on a 5.4 million dollar contract was not invited to Oilers training camp due to a fallout at the end of last season. Last year in what was an injury prone season the 34 year-old only played in 37 games where he scored four goals and 13 points while posting an ugly -19. Meanwhile Gerber who played in the KHL last year signed a one year two way contract with Edmonton that would pay him $500,000 if he made the Oilers and $200,000 for playing in the American Hockey League.
