1. HALAK LOSES EXHIBITION OPENER
The St. Louis Blues big off-season acquisition Jaroslav Halak made 15 saves on Tuesday but it wasn’t enough as the Colorado Avalanche emerged with a 3-1 victory. The turning point came in the second period when David Jones and Luke Walker scored 31 seconds apart to give Colorado the lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Getting the third Avs goal was Kevin Shattenkirk. Also starring was T.J. Galiardi who has two assist for Colorado. Meanwhile former 2006 first round pick Patrik Berglund had the lone Blues goal.

2. MAPLE LEAFS GET SHUT OUT AT HOME
The Toronto Maple Leafs had countless opportunities on the power play but at the end it wasn’t good enough as they dropped a 5-0 decision to their arch rivals the Ottawa Senators. 22 year-old Sens forward Nick Foligno who is coming off an injury riddled campaign scored an impressive goal and Ottawa’s 19 year-old prospect Robin Lehner stared in making 24 saves for the shutout. Also scoring for Ottawa was Jesse Winchester, Corey Locke, Chris Neil and Chris Kelly.
3. POTI SIGNS TWO YEAR EXTENSION WITH CAPITALS
Coming off an impressive +26 season the Washington Capitals signed veteran rearguard Tom Poti to a two-year extension worth 5.75 million. Last season Potti who is 33 years-old scored four goals and 28 points last year and four points last spring in the Capitals first round loss against the Montreal Canadiens.
