NHL NOTES

NIEMI NOW A SHARK
Approximately one month after the Chicago Blackhawks walked away from an arbitrator’s decision, Stanley Cup winning goaltender, Antti Niemi, has found a new home with the San Jose Sharks. This 27 year-old, who won 26 regular season games and posted a 2.25 GAA, won a 2.75 arbitrators case, only to have the Stanley Cup Blackhawks walk away, due to salary cap problems. “Antti’s play last season speaks for itself,” Sharks GM, Doug Wilson, who didn’t resign starting goalie, Evgeni Nabokov said. “Our goal this summer was to create the best goaltending unit we could and we feel we have successfully done that.” Niemi who had seven regular season shutouts was stellar in the playoffs, where he posted a 16-6 record with a 2.63 GAA and a .910 save percentage.

STAAL TO MISS BEGINNING OF PENS TRAINING CAMP
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal said that he will definitely be ready for the regular season. Staal, who suffered a lacerated tendon in his foot last spring during the Eastern Conference semi-finals, experienced a bad infection this off-season in that area. “The fact that Jordan came back and played with this injury during the playoffs is the testament to his toughness and competitiveness,” said Penguins general manager, Fred Shero. “He has experienced some setbacks due to infection, but is now on the road to recovery.”

WEIGHT BACK ON THE ISLAND
The New York Islanders have decided to bring back their captain forward, Doug Weight, for another season. Over a 19 year career with the Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and Islanders, Weight has scored 276 goals and 1,024 points. “Doug has played an important role in helping to develop our young players over the past two seasons and we’re excited to see him continue his historic career on Long Island.” Last season Weight had one goal and 17 points.
