Peter Forsberg Returning…Again?

The month of January has seen many veteran stars such as Mats Sundin, Brendan Shanahan and Claude Lemieux make NHL comebacks. According to some persistent rumors around the NHL circles, Peter Forsberg might not be that far behind.

This two time Stanley Cup winner, who was a former Philadelphia Flyers first round draft pick in 1991, had his career derailed in the past five seasons, due to an assortment of devastating concussion injuries, and an ankle, foot injury.

This 35 year-old, who won the MVP in 2003, after registering 29 goals and 77 assists in his last healthy NHL season, has began skating back home in Sweden.

“If it doesn’t work now, I’m forced to give it up for good,” said Forsberg, who came out of retirement last year to score 14 points in 9 games, with the Colorado Avalanche. The downside, to the comeback, is that the veteran of 706 games, missed three out of the four contests last spring, against the Detroit Red Wings in the second round.

Still feeling banged up after the season, Forsberg, who has also played for the Nashville Predators and Philadelphia Flyers during his distinguished career, was set to call it quits in the fall, but has now decided to postpone those retirement plans.

Feeling better for quite some time now, Forsberg, who has accumulated 885 points, will spend a few weeks testing his injured right foot and ankle, to see if they can withstand the rigors of NHL hockey.

Apparently, it has been diagnosed that Forsberg’s foot issues are a result of a muscle imbalance that is causing the injury.
