The undisputed, number one story on Friday night, around the National Hockey League, is the miraculous return of Ottawa Senators’ captain, Daniel Alfredsson.
Not only did this 35 year-old veteran amaze his doctors, by playing only a week after his arthroscopic knee surgery, but he also contributed with two assists, in what was a 6-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.
“I feel better than before,” said Alfredsson. “There’s no grinding in the knee.”
Rumors were being circulated in Ottawa last week that the player, known to his teammates as —the heart and soul of the squad —was practicing hard and that he was determined to play against Phoenix . His determination did not surprise his teammates, who see first hand the dedication Alfredsson puts into his off-ice work.
“I wasn’t really surprised,” said line mate, Jason Spezza, who had two goals on this night. “After the surgery, he said everything went well, and he just doesn’t seem to want to miss too much time. We had great energy. That’s how we want to play.”
Even though Alfredsson was back a week ahead of schedule, Ottawa coach, Craig Hartsburg, wasn’t hesitant in giving this first liner a regular shift, and some playing time on the power play, where he impressed his coach.
“Alfie did some smart things,” said coach, Hartsburg. “I think he’ll get better and stronger as he goes on.”
Another positive story, from this game, was the solid play of Senators’ starting goalie, Martin Gerber, who got off to a shaky start this season. Gerber, who is being given every opportunity to solidify his position as the number one goalie, made 35 saves in what was – by far — his best game this season.
“We had four lines doing the same things,” said Hartsburg, who was happy with his team’s play for the first two periods. “In the third we allowed them to set the tempo – and set the pace.” “We hadn’t played in a week, so I was happy with the way we played.”
Leading the way, was their heart and soul captain, who showed his courage and strong desire to come back and help his team compete – and win.
