If anything, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis has shown that he doesn’t give up easily. Almost three weeks ago, Gillis offered free agent scorer Mats Sundin a two year 20 million contract that was politely turned down by the 37 year-old Swede.
Spending the summer relaxing in Sweden, Sundin who has been a loyal Toronto Maple Leaf since 1994, has notified teams showing interest that he is in no hurry to make any decisions and likely won’t decide on his future until August.
Even though Sundin turned down that tempting contract offer, Gillis who was on The Team 1040 radio station in Vancouver on Thursday, said that he is still optimistic that Vancouver can eventually land Sundin who according to Gillis would play with the Sedin twins. Gillis, who was a player’s agent before taking over in Vancouver, believes that the 2010 Winter Olympics which are taking place in Vancouver could serve as a possible incentive for Sundin to join the Canucks. An incentive in terms of the opportunity for Sundin to captain the Swedish team to a gold medal on what would be his home rink in front of his home fans.
At the present time, Gillis is still in close contact with Sundin’s agent JP Berry.
Ryan Miller Signs Extension With Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres shored up their goaltending situation by inking former 2001 Hobey Baker Award Winner Ryan Miller to a five year contract extension worth a cool 31.25 million. “He’s established himself as one of the top young goaltenders,” said Sabres general manager Darcy Regier. “This is a goalie that we believe in.”
Miller, who had 36 wins last season, has a career record of 112-68-19 with 7 shutouts and a 2.69 GAA.
