Mark Lafleur
After a difficult few months, hockey hall of famer Guy Lafleur received some good news on Friday regarding his son Mark who has been in jail facing multiple charges including two counts of sexual assault.
Even though the judge Serge Boisvert said that it is very likely that Mark carried out the two counts of sexual assaults that he was accused of committing, there was still enough reasonable doubt to acquit him. Boisvert used the term ‘not reliable’ in describing the alleged event, because the victim was apparently drunk at the time. The bad news however is that Mark who is only 23 pleaded guilty to 14 other charges that stems from assault, verbalizing threats to a minor and forcible confinement. It will be another tense week for Guy Lafleur as the court decides on sentencing.
Sean Avery Free Agent
He might not exactly be the most popular player among his peers, but come July 1, a lot of teams will be desperately trying to sign pesky forward Sean Avery. This Pickering native has played a key role with the New York Rangers in not only scoring but also agitating his opponents into taking retaliatory penalties. Since coming to the Rangers in a trade at the midpoint of the 2006/07 season, Avery has scored 53 points in 86 games and is an impressive plus 17. Even more impressive is that since coming to New York, the Rangers are 50-20-16 with him in the lineup and 9-13 without him.
Needing the gritty sandpaper play of Avery, Rangers GM Glen Sather was talking to agent Pat Morris on Saturday before the draft in desperately trying to get Avery signed before he hits the open market. “We had an interesting dialogue, and there appears to be disagreement over what Sean’s value is to the New York Rangers,” Morris said. “It’s (free agency) likely to happen.” According to Sather, Morris has given him a list of many comparable players who are getting at least 4 million dollars per year. While Morris has told Sather that he has never inquired about four million a year, he did compare Avery to Ottawa Senators forward Chris Kelly who is now in line for a hefty 2.125 million per year for the next four seasons.
