There were absolutely no big surprises on draft day as Oren Koules who represents the Tampa Bay Lightning new ownership group approached the microphone minutes after the official draft began and announced with their first selection, Sarnia Sting scoring forward Steve Stamkos.
Over the past two seasons, Stamkos has attracted scouts with his stellar play by registering 197 points in 124 games with the Sting of the Ontario Hockey League. Stamkos, who played a pivotal role in helping Canada win gold at last winter’s Junior Hockey Championships, was excited about getting the opportunity to play with veteran and former Lightning first overall pick Vincent Lecavalier. “I think that’s the best situation for me to have, playing with a guy like Vincent Lecavalier,” said Stamkos. “I’m putting the pressure on myself to make it to the NHL next year.” This 6 foot 183 pound speedster is temporarily being penciled in as the second line centerman. Weeks leading up to the draft there has seen strong excitement in Tampa as billboards and shirts have been made up dedicated to this young emerging superstar coming to Florida.
There was even more positive news for the Lightning who are coming off a dismal season that saw them win only 31 games. Another bit of excitement heading towards next season is that general manager Jay Feaster will be working with a new ownership group led by Koules who is also a Hollywood producer. “There is no better way to start his tenure than bringing in Stamkos,” Koules said.
