Malkin on the Block

According to various hockey sources, it looks like Tampa Bay Lightning captain and franchise all time scoring leader Vincent Lecavalier won’t be leaving Florida during his NHL career.

This Quebec native, who was selected first overall by Tampa Bay back in 1988, has enjoyed a stellar career which has seen the 28 year old not only register 602 points in his nine years, but also lead the team to an improbable Stanley Cup win in 2004. Showing how much the veteran means to the organization, management who are getting ready to pick Steve Stamkos first overall at this weekend’s draft, are also taking action into signing Lecavalier to a life time contract with the team. The two sides are very eager to get a deal done as Lecavalier who captured the Rocket Richard Trophy a year ago currently has one year remaining on his existing four- year 27.5 million contract.

Malkin On The Trading Block?

The most shocking move at this weekend’s entry draft could be the Pittsburgh Penguins who according to various sources have offered 21 year-old superstar Evgeni Malkin to the Los Angeles Kings for their second overall pick and Mike Cammalleri. Malkin, who is affectionately known as ‘Gino’ in Pittsburgh had a breakthrough regular season that saw him register 106 points in 82 games. In the playoffs, Malkin who has one year left on his entry level contract which will pay him $984,000 slumped mightily in the finals but still managed 22 playoff points. Word is that Pens general manager Ray Shero is looking to free money to sign free agent Marian Hossa. Meanwhile, the Kings general manager Dean Lombardi is shooting down such talks by saying that he wants his team to build by drafting young players. Stay tuned!

Carolina Hurricanes and Nashville Predators Make A Minor Trade

The Carolina Hurricanes have decided to roll the dice by acquiring rugged forward Darcy Hordichuk who is a pending free agent on July 1. Looking for more toughness, the Canes are working on a fair offer for Hordichuk before other teams can bid for his services. If he signs elsewhere then the Canes will be compensated with a fifth round draft pick in 2010. This season, he scored only three points while racking up 60 penalty minutes. The Canes didn’t stop there as they signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a long- term contract. “We’re very happy to get Tim signed long-term,” said Carolina GM Jim Rutherford about his most consistent defenseman who notched 19 points last year.
