Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray is convinced that he hired the right man in Craig Hartsburg to coach the Ottawa Senators next season.
Hartsburg, who had previous NHL coaching stints with the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Black hawks, enjoyed some great success last season during the Christmas holidays when he led Canada to the gold medal at the World Junior Championships.
For the past three years, Hartsburg coached the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds and feels that he is ready for what awaits him with the Ottawa Senators who a year after making the Stanley Cup finals finished seventh in the Eastern Conference. “I know it’s a great challenge and I can’t wait,” Hartsburg who also served as a Philadelphia Flyers Assistant Coach from 2002-2004 said. “I know it’s a great challenge and I can’t wait because I love challenges.” “To me it’s about a program and getting the players to buy into it,” Hartsburg who signed on for three years on Friday said about his coaching philosophy. “A scorer’s not just a scorer, he needs to do more.” “A checker’s more than just a checker, he needs to do more.” Murray, who filled in last February for the fired John Paddock believes that Hartsburg who has compiled an overall coaching record of 184-190-69 in his NHL stints was best suited to handle the pressure of Ottawa. “It appeared to me that one guy thrived on the scrutiny, thrived on the pressure and wanted to be in Ottawa,” Murray said. “He wanted this job badly and he sent a message to me that at the end of the day, that’s the kind of person we wanted.” Hartsburg will have his work cut out for him as the Senators who were one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup this season, lost in the first round to the Pittsburgh Penguins and ended the season as a fragile team.
Peter De Boer To Coach The Florida Panthers
On Friday, the Florida Panthers filled their coaching vacancy when they signed former Kitchener Rangers winner Peter De Boer. For the past seven campaigns, De Boer who was also a candidate for the Ottawa Senators position, was with the Rangers and led them to a couple of OHL Championships. He will take over for Jacques Martin who was fired as the coach but still remains as the general manager.
