Even in the off- season Toronto Maple Leafs forward Kyle Wellwood can’t seem to shake off the old injury bug. After missing all of training camp and a significant portion of the season last year recovering from groin surgery, Wellwod finally got healthy and provided some speed and much needed scoring the Leafs attack. This restricted free agent who let it be known that he wants to return in the blue and white of the Leafs recently fractured a bone in his right foot while playing a game of indoor soccer. Wellwood who scored 21 points in 59 games last season is scheduled to recover in time for training camp. One still has to wonder how this will affect his summer workout programs and how this might set him back in the fall.
Looks Like Cliff Fletcher Will Be GM Next Year
Word out of the Toronto Maple Leafs camp is that they are willing to wait up to next year if they have to in order to hire the suitable candidate for general manager. According to insiders, Cliff Fletcher who took over as the temporary general manager last January will once again be back next season. “Some people think hiring senior positions can be done quickly and easily,” said President and CEO of the Leafs Richard Peddie. “It’s not that way in any industry. We did a very thorough anaysis.” “We talked to everyone from league officials, to agents to some media to peers to see if there was some kind of consensus.” Apparently rumor also has it that the Leafs have targeted certain executives who are still under contract and won’t be a free agent until next year. These names being bantered about include Ken Holland and Jim Nill from the Detroit Red Wings, David Poile of the Nashville Predators, Doug Wilson of the San Jose Sharks, Darcy Regier of the Buffalo Sabres and the worse kept secret of all Brian Burke of the Anahiem Ducks. “Originally I signed a 19 month contract with the Leafs going through September of next year,” Fletcher who was to be a consultant when a new general manager was found said on Wednesday. “In the last month they’ve been having discussions whether moving forward it made sense to wait for the right person to wait for one of their top choices to become available.” Being the good company man that he is Fletcher has agreed to stay on as general manager for as long as it takes until the Leafs hire whom they would like to take the reins.
