Rob Blake on the Big Screen

On June 20, Los Angeles Kings veteran defenceman Rob Blake will be seen on the big screen in the hit movie Love Guru that opens June 20.

Blake shot his scene back in early September after the Kings opened their season against the Anaheim Ducks in England. While the team flew back to Los Angeles, Blake took a detour and went to Toronto for the shooting.  “All of my scenes had to be done in one day on a break in the (Kings) schedule,” said Blake. “We started early and were there for about 18-20 hours straight for just a small scene.” “They had to take so many different takes with different camera angles, it is a slow process.”  “Basically in the scene, it is the Kings vs. the Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup Finals. I take a face-off and we end up losing the Cup in game 7,” Blake said.

Towards the end of the season, Blake became a target for razzing when the team saw a movie on the road called 21. “This preview came on for Love Guru and they (teammates) were heckling me,” said Blake. “Then of course they didn’t see me in the preview, and they weren’t sure I was in the movie.”

Blake has not seen the final edited film, but he is hoping that the scenes he did with the dialogue made the movie as opposed to the cutting floor. “There was one scene with Mike Myers where he is on the bench and I have to go talk to him, which is kind of interesting,” Blake said. “You can see how he kind of ad-libs everything. He just kind of comes out and goes through it, and if he didn’t like the look of it, he says let’s try something different here.”

This is the second appearance Blake has made on the screen. In the mid 1990’s, he made a brief appearance on the television series called Pacific Blue.
